| Kendo
was derived from the Japanese samurai
swordsmanship. Armour called Bougu
is worn for physical protection and
a bamboo-made sword called Shinai
for training and
competition.
Kendo appears to be
very physical and with the dynamics
of a fast-striking action. Yet it
is an art that places great emphasis
on the development of a high level
of skill in awareness, body movement,
concentration, footwork, physical
agility, inherent respect and timing.
In Japan, Kendo is treated
as martial art Budou which is a unifying
activity, creating a sense of harmony
through its competitive element. There
is a strong emphasis placed on initiative
and taking control. This plays an
important part in Kendo development
along with a constant sense of readiness
and alertness.
